But he was not the first. Five days earlier Vladimir Ilyushin's spacecraft malfunctions in orbit and crashes him into China where he is held prisoner for a year. The Soviets race to cover this up. But even he was not the first, eleven months earlier author Robert A Heinlein is told by Red Army cadets that a Russian had been launched into space that day in Sputnik 4. A guidance fault destroys the ship. Russian officials deny the ship was manned. Russia was using cosmonauts as guinea pigs. Gagarin was merely the first cosmonaut to return. Or was he? Ilyushin was a test pilot and never involved with the space programme. He was officially in China in 1961 but as a prisoner but for specialist treatment following a car crash a year earlier. He did not travel there by spacecraft. Sputnik 4 was launched as a test flight with a test dummy and voice recording to check that the radio worked. Radio enthusiasts picked up the signal and assumed it to be the voice of a living man from space. Gagarin was the first man in space.
